Frequently asked questions

Is this a live GPS tracker?
No — and that’s on purpose. A live tracker shows location in real time, but needs charging, a monthly fee and is bulky. A Paw-Back tag is passive: when someone finds your pet and scans it, they reach you instantly and you get their location. No battery, no fee, works for life. Most lost pets are found by a person — the tag gets them home fast.
So when would I need a tracker instead?
If your pet is an escape artist and you want to actively hunt them down, a live tracker is the right tool. For the everyday “help whoever finds my pet bring it home”, the tag is simpler, cheaper and always on. Many owners keep a tag as their always-on baseline and add a tracker only if they truly need live tracking.
What happens when someone scans it?
They see your pet’s page — its name, a secure way to message you, and a “call owner” button if you enabled it. In Lost mode on a Care plan you also get an email alert: first the approximate area, then the finder’s exact GPS if they tap “Share location”.
Is my email or number shown?
Your email is never shown — messages come through a secure relay. Your name and a phone number appear only if you choose to.
Does it need an app or charging?
Never. It’s laser-engraved metal — no app, no battery, nothing to charge. It works for life.
I already have a microchip. Do I still need this?
They work together. A microchip needs a vet or shelter with a scanner, during opening hours. The QR tag works for anyone with a phone, instantly — so a friendly finder can bring your pet home the same minute.
